Minang People Ready to Cooperate with City Government

Many street vendors (PKLs) on the road creates own problem for Jakarta Provincial Government since the PKLs come from different ethnics, where one of them is Minang. Therefore, Minangkabau Economic and Cultural Movement (Gebu Minang) will cooperate with Jakarta Provincial Government to provide place for PKL to sell.

“In Lampung, we built a mall special for PKLs to sell with low price kiosk and installment paid system. In the future, we will try that in Jakarta. If in Tanah Abang the kiosk price is Rp 50-300 million per square meter, in Lampung we only sell for Rp 8 million per square meter,” stated Deputy Head of Gebu Minang for economy sector, Herman Malano, during Gebu Minang management inauguration which attended by Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo, Wednesday (10/12) night.

He added that many Minang people work in trade sector that need supports from the government. According to him, big trade wheels will contribute significant local revenue for Jakarta Provincial Government. “There are 8 million Minang people spread throughout Indonesia and 2 million of them are in Jakarta. Most of these people are trading at markets,” he explained.

Fauzi admitted many Jakarta residents are come from Minang and they have contributed in development as well as city’s economic wheels. He hoped that Minang people in Jakarta could keep maintaining the city to become peace, safe, convenient, and more advance. “The more Minang people are trading in Jakarta, the faster economic wheels will spin and contribute more revenues,” he expressed.
